The Common Kukuri Snake (Oligodon arnensis)

Sinhala: Arani dathketiya

The common kukuri snake can grow up to 600mm in length. The dorsal aspect is olive green. There are about 19 to 25 black crossbars from neck to tail. On the other head and neck are chevron-shaped black cross bars. The ventral aspect is pearly white.
the common kukuri snake is a diurnal terrestrial snake. It is widely distributed in the lowland plains up to about 500 meters above sea level. However, its strong crepuscular habits too have been observed. It is often met on roads between 1900 to 2000 hours in the dry zone.
The common kukuri snake mainly feeds on reptile eggs. It reproduces by laying eggs. occasionally a specimen may bite instantly resulting in an incised wound caused by its razor sharp kukuri-like teeth. The wound is painful for some time. However, it is a non-venomous snake. May believe it to be a venomous krait.

Identification
Its coloration in olive green, its body morphology, such as the ovate head, neck is not distinct.
The body is short and cylindrical and the tail is short.
